Sir Walter Raleigh's connection to the Virgin Islands is indirect at best — his 1595 voyage targeted the Orinoco delta in present-day Venezuela, not the Caribbean archipelago now administered by Britain. The British Virgin Islands has nonetheless issued numerous commemorative crowns under royal warrant, largely marketed through the Franklin Mint and similar distributors to collector audiences rather than circulating populations. KM#242 belongs to that wave of licensed issues produced in the early 2000s under the Islands' currency authority.
