Issued as part of Canada's official coin program for the 1976 Montreal Olympics, this piece was one of a four-series set of 28 coins released between 1973 and 1976 to help fund the Games — a financing scheme that ultimately fell far short of covering Montreal's catastrophic budget overruns, which left the city carrying Olympic debt until 2006.
The two catalogue references reflect a known variety split between coins struck with and without the "cased" finish, a distinction the Royal Canadian Mint introduced partway through production.
