Pitcairn's coin program has always been a revenue exercise rather than a circulating currency — the island's population never exceeded a few dozen during this period, and these issues were sold directly to collectors through agents. The Prince Edward angle almost certainly ties to his 1999 marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones, with commemorative programs frequently anticipating royal events by a year or two to capture advance collector interest.
