Reverse description The central field features a three-quarter portrait of General Henry Knox in 18th-century military uniform, positioned before an architectural rendering of the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox. To the left of the portrait, two standard 400-troy-ounce gold bars inscribed FINE GOLD 999.9 NET WT 400 oz are depicted in relief. A cursive facsimile signature of H. Knox appears to the right of the portrait. The legend FORT KNOX arches across the upper field within a banner, and the series title THE HISTORY OF GOLD appears prominently in the lower exergue.

Additional information

Fort Knox has never been formally audited by an independent body. The last physical inspection of any kind occurred in 1974, a congressional visit that examined roughly 3% of the stored gold. This coin's subject remains, officially, unverified in full — a peculiarity that gives the theme more edge than most bullion-themed commemoratives manage.
