Tokelau — three coral atolls in the South Pacific with a combined population under 2,000 — has no independent monetary system and uses the New Zealand dollar for everyday transactions. Its coin program exists entirely for the collector market, administered through external minting arrangements. This piece was issued to mark Elizabeth II's 70th year on the throne, an anniversary she reached in February 2022 and celebrated officially in June — she died in September of that year, making Platinum Jubilee issues the last of their type.
The embedded diamond is a recurring device in high-end commemorative issues of this period, chosen for obvious thematic reasons given the jubilee name.
