Niue has operated as a licensing hub for novelty collector coinage since the 1990s, issuing legal tender under New Zealand's monetary umbrella while retaining virtually no circulation economy of its own. The Pippi Longstocking franchise, controlled by the Swedish company Saltkråkan AB, has been strictly managed since Astrid Lindgren's death in 2002 — any licensed numismatic issue requires formal approval through that estate.
