Additional information

Pope John Paul II's 1979 Caribbean tour — his first major international journey after his October 1978 election — prompted a wave of commemorative issues across the region. Dominica was among the smallest nations to produce one. The visit itself never included a stop on the island; Dominica issued the coin in anticipation of a papal presence that, for this particular territory, remained largely symbolic.
