Issued the year before the tenth anniversary of Diana's death in Paris, this Pobjoy Mint commemorative pairs two figures whose public association was largely constructed after the fact — they met only a handful of times, most notably in New York in 1997, roughly six weeks before both died within days of each other in August and September of that year. The coincidence of their deaths within a single month generated enormous popular sentiment that the mint plainly recognized as commercially viable.
