The Libertad design borrowed here originates with Mexican coinage — the Winged Victory figure drawn from the Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City, erected in 1910 to mark the centenary of the Mexican War of Independence. Solomon Islands has no historical connection to that iconography whatsoever. These fractional gold pieces are minted entirely for the collector and bullion gift market, with the Solomon Islands issuing authority functioning essentially as a licensing vehicle for foreign-designed commemorative product.
