| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, after the effigy designed by Arnold Machin as adapted by Patrick Brindley. The portrait is rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and drapery. The legend ELIZABETH II curves along the left rim, while CANADA 1974 follows the right rim. A small maple leaf appears at the base of the legend, serving as a national symbol dividing the two inscriptions. |

Issued as part of Canada's 1976 Montreal Olympic Games commemorative program, this coin belongs to a series of 28 silver pieces released across seven thematic sets between 1973 and 1976. Lacrosse was included not as filler but as a pointed acknowledgment — it is one of the oldest team sports in North America, developed by Indigenous peoples centuries before European contact, and had been declared one of Canada's two national sports in 1859.
The series was struck in both matte and proof finishes, accounting for the dual Charlton reference numbers. Matte examples were sold in sets; the proof version commands a consistent premium on the secondary market.
