Reverse description Detailed photographic-style depiction of the historic wooden church complex on Kizhi Island, Lake Onega, Republic of Karelia, Russia, dominated by the multi-domed Church of the Transfiguration with its characteristic tiered onion domes surmounted by crosses, alongside the adjacent bell tower to the left. The architectural ensemble is rendered in fine relief against a graduated field. The legend KIZHI RUSSIA arcs prominently along the upper rim, with the gold fineness mark Au.999 inscribed vertically along the left side of the field.

Additional information

Part of a sprawling series of micro-gold issues produced for Fiji by the Polish Mint (Mennica Polska) in the early 2010s, this piece honors the Kizhi Pogost — a UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island in Lake Onega, Russia, whose 22-dome wooden Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1714 entirely without metal fasteners, according to tradition. Fiji's role here is purely nominal; the country lent its issuing authority to a collector product with no connection to Fijian history or commerce.
