Cook Islands has issued commemorative silver in staggering volume since the 1970s, much of it with tenuous connections to the islands themselves. This piece at least has geographic logic: James Cook made three voyages through the Pacific between 1768 and 1779, charting the island group that now bears his name during his first expedition aboard Endeavour. He never claimed them for settlement — his charts simply stuck.
Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, in February 1779 during an attempt to take a local chief hostage over a stolen cutter.
