The Hologram Maple Leaf series launched in 1999 as a direct response to advances in counterfeiting technology, with the Royal Canadian Mint among the first sovereign mints globally to incorporate laser holography into a bullion-adjacent platinum issue. The 2002 date places this coin in the series' middle years, before the format was quietly discontinued in favor of other security innovations.
Platinum Maple Leafs of this period were struck to .9995 fineness — fractionally purer than the gold equivalent — a specification the RCM held as a deliberate market differentiator against the American Platinum Eagle.
