The "Gold Maple Leaf fractional set" designation places this piece within a product format the Royal Canadian Mint developed specifically to lower the entry cost for bullion buyers — dividing a full troy ounce across multiple smaller coins sold together. The .9999 fineness standard, which Canada pioneered for the Maple Leaf series beginning with a .9999 issue in 1982, was itself a deliberate bid to outpace the South African Krugerrand's .9167 purity in the competitive bullion market of that decade.
