The Berlin Wall fell on the night of November 9, 1989, after an East German spokesman mistakenly announced at a press conference that new travel regulations would take effect "immediately, without delay" — a bureaucratic blunder that triggered crowds to rush the checkpoints before any orders had been issued to guards.
