Issued the same year Diana died in Paris, this Niuean commemorative was part of a flood of hastily licensed tribute coinage that hit the market within weeks of the August 1997 crash. Niue had by the mid-1990s become one of the more prolific sellers of collector licensing rights — a revenue stream that mattered considerably for an island of roughly 2,000 people with almost no other export economy to speak of.
KM#92 is one of several Diana pieces attributed to Niue from this period, making individual issue differentiation a cataloging headache that persists today.
