The Czech Lion series, struck by the Czech Mint on behalf of Niue, was introduced in 2018 as a direct response to booming Central European demand for fractional gold bullion with a distinctly Bohemian identity. The 2019 issue is the second in that run. Niue's role here is purely jurisdictional — the island's coinage rights have been licensed to underwrite dozens of European collector and bullion programs, a revenue arrangement that has nothing to do with Pacific monetary policy.
The Czech Mint's .9999 refining standard on this series was a deliberate step above the .999 fineness common to many competing European fractional issues.
