One of fourteen pieces in Niue's Cathedral Notre Dame series, this issue was released the year after a major restoration controversy reignited debate over the cathedral's long-deferred structural repairs — work that would ultimately be overtaken by the April 2019 fire. The series itself belongs to a crowded genre of Pacific island silver issues exploiting the prestige of European heritage sites, with Niue's favorable licensing arrangements making it a preferred issuer for this type of commemorative program.
