Additional information

The Battle of Kapyong, fought in late April 1951, saw the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment hold a position in the Kapyong Valley against a massive Chinese People's Volunteer Army offensive that had already collapsed the South Korean 6th Division on their flank. The Australians, badly outnumbered and effectively surrounded, called artillery fire onto their own positions to break an assault that reached within meters of their lines. The battalion was awarded the United States Presidential Unit Citation — one of only a handful of Commonwealth units ever to receive it.
