Additional information

Fromelles, July 19–20, 1916: the worst 24 hours in Australian military history, with roughly 5,500 Australian casualties in a single night attack on the Sugar Loaf salient that achieved nothing strategically. The battle was largely suppressed in official records for decades, partly because British commanders had dismissed Australian warnings that the assault was suicidal.

The mass grave containing 250 Australian and British soldiers was not discovered until 2008, during construction work near Pheasant Wood. Forensic identification work continued well past this coin's issue date.
