| Reverse description | A Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is depicted in high relief, shown in a naturalistic three-quarter view foraging low to the ground amidst tufts of native grassland vegetation. The denomination 10 DOLLARS is inscribed in the lower left field, while the species name NORTHERN HAIRY-NOSED WOMBAT curves along the right rim in vertical lettering. The polished proof field provides strong contrast to the finely detailed frosted relief of the animal and surrounding flora. |

| Additional information |
Part of Australia's larger native animals commemorative program, this issue appeared at a moment when the northern hairy-nosed wombat — Lasiorhinus krefftii — was down to fewer than 70 known individuals, confined entirely to Epping Forest National Park in Queensland. The species had been declared among the most endangered mammals on Earth. The Royal Australian Mint rarely attached that kind of ecological urgency to its commemorative selections, but the timing here was not accidental.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II made its debut on Australian coinage in 1998, making this one of the earliest domestic issues to carry it.
