| Reverse description | A finely detailed high-relief depiction of a laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) perched facing right atop a rustic timber fence post, its beak open in characteristic call. The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark appears in the lower field near the fence. The arc legend THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 10 OZ. 999 SILVER runs around the upper periphery, with the date 1997 inscribed in the lower exergue. The entire design is encircled by a border of raised beads. |

| Additional information |
The High Relief Kookaburra was introduced in 1997 as a premium variant within the Perth Mint's existing bullion Kookaburra program, distinguished by its deeply struck fields and elevated design — a technically demanding process that required additional die pressure and significantly higher rejection rates at the press. The two-year span of KM#494 reflects production across both the 1997 and 1998 issues under the same catalog reference, though the reverse design changed annually as it did throughout the series.
Mintages for these high relief strikes were substantially lower than the standard 10-dollar Kookaburras produced in the same period.
