Additional information

Nauru has no national mint and no history of circulating coinage — the island used Australian currency for everyday transactions. The "Bank of Nauru" issues of the 1990s were collector-targeted commemoratives produced almost entirely for export, with the institution functioning more as a licensing authority than a central bank in any conventional sense. This piece was struck ahead of the Atlanta Games, which opened in July 1996 and were later overshadowed by the Centennial Olympic Park bombing.
