Additional information

The British Solomon Islands Protectorate was declared in 1893, initially to suppress the blackbirding trade — the violent recruitment, often amounting to kidnapping, of islanders for forced labor on Queensland sugar plantations and Fijian cotton farms. This coin marks the centenary of that declaration. The protectorate's early administration was skeletal; a single Resident Commissioner governed a scatter of islands with minimal resources for decades.

KM#49 is a one-year type with no known circulation, struck for the commemorative market.
