Additional information

Liberia's early 2000s ECU series was a prolific exercise in souvenir numismatics — gold-plated base metal pieces nominally denominated in a currency unit that had already ceased to exist when the euro replaced it in 1999. The ECU was never circulating coinage in any country; it functioned as a unit of account within the European Monetary System from 1979 until its dissolution. Liberia had no stake in any of this, and these pieces were produced purely for the collector market, with Portugal serving as subject matter rather than issuing authority.
