Additional information

Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was frankly opportunistic — the country issued coins honoring currencies, monuments, and historical figures from nations it had no connection to, targeting European collector markets hungry for novelty items. This piece, nominally denominated in both dollars and ECU, arrives four years after the ECU itself ceased to exist, replaced by the euro in 1999.

The ECU denomination is pure fiction at this point. No legal tender framework, no redemption value, no issuing authority ever sanctioned it.
