Obverse description The national coat of arms of Sierra Leone occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported by two lions rampant, flanked by palm trees, with a mountain range in the background. A ribbon below bears the national motto UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE. The legend REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE curves along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while the date 2008 is inscribed in the lower exergue. The entire design is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field, framed by a fine beaded border.

Additional information

Sierra Leone's wildlife series of the 2000s was produced under contract by foreign minting houses — the Pobjoy Mint struck a number of these issues — targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. The Bank of Sierra Leone authorized dozens of themed commemoratives during this period, a revenue strategy common among smaller economies with limited hard currency reserves.

The duiker, a small antelope genus widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, is represented by several species within Sierra Leone's remaining forest patches, including Gola Forest — one of West Africa's last significant rainforest remnants.
