Jamaica gained independence in 1962, but retained the British monarch as head of state — meaning Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation remained the foundational ceremonial event being commemorated here, four decades on. The 1993 issue was part of a broader Commonwealth-wide wave of 40th anniversary coronation pieces released that year, with the Bank of Jamaica participating alongside dozens of other issuing authorities. Most were produced in limited proof runs for the collector market and saw no circulation whatsoever.
