Obverse description The full achievement of the Bahamian coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield bearing a rising sun above a sailing ship on waves, supported to the left by a blue marlin and to the right by a flamingo standing amid native vegetation. Above the shield rises an elaborate helm and mantling surmounted by a conch shell crest with a wreath. Below the shield, a scroll bears the national motto in two lines: FORWARD UPWARD ONWARD TOGETHER. The circular legend COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, and the date 1986 appears in the lower field beneath the motto scroll.

Additional information

The 1986 Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh — and were notable less for the athletics than for the boycott that gutted them. Thirty-two nations, most of them African and Caribbean, withdrew in protest over the British government's refusal to impose sanctions on apartheid South Africa. The Bahamas was among the boycotting nations, which makes this commemorative issue a quiet historical oddity: a coin celebrating an event its own issuing government declined to attend.
