Jamaica issued this large-format coin as part of the Franklin Mint's prolific run of collector-oriented Caribbean commemoratives during the 1970s — a period when several newly independent island nations contracted private mints to generate foreign exchange revenue through numismatic sales rather than circulation. The Columbus theme was politically charged even then; by 1975, postcolonial scholarship was already contesting the celebratory framing of European contact narratives, yet the design went ahead regardless.
Struck in proof and specimen finishes as well as business strike, the series sold primarily to North American collectors.
