Sierra Leone's commemorative output in the mid-2000s leaned heavily on explorer and discovery themes marketed to the collector trade, and this Columbus piece is squarely in that category. The country had no historical connection to Columbus's four voyages, all of which terminated in the Caribbean and Central America between 1492 and 1504.
Columbus died in Valladolid in 1506 — still insisting he had reached Asia.
