The 1916 Saint-Gaudens double eagle it references was never actually minted — the series ran from 1907 through 1933, with no 1916-dated issue struck for circulation, making the "tribute" designation here a nod to the design period rather than any specific coin. Output from the Saint-Gaudens high-relief program was famously curtailed after Augustus Saint-Gaudens died in 1907, leaving Theodore Roosevelt's ambitious coinage reform to be finished by Mint engravers who lowered the relief for mechanical compatibility with high-speed presses.
