Liberia has issued gold coins under licensing arrangements with foreign distributors — primarily European — since the 1990s, a practice that generated substantial criticism for producing coins with no meaningful connection to the issuing nation. This piece is almost certainly one of those contracted issues, struck abroad and sold directly into the collector market rather than ever circulating in Liberia or bearing any relationship to Liberian monetary policy.
The capercaillie is native to northern European and Siberian forests — entirely absent from West Africa.
