Additional information

Sierra Leone's millennial commemorative program was aggressively licensed to the Pobjoy Mint, which produced dozens of thematic issues for the country around 2000 — many with no meaningful connection to Sierra Leone itself. This piece is one of them. The country was in the middle of a brutal civil war at the time of issue, with the RUF's campaign of amputations and mass displacement still ongoing; the central bank was functioning largely under international support.

These issues were sold almost entirely to the collector market in Europe and North America and saw no domestic circulation whatsoever.
