| Obverse description | The obverse displays the official seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands at centre, featuring a dragonfly above a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation device, flanked by a radiant sun in the upper field, a fishing net to the upper right, palm trees and stars to the lower left, and a traditional outrigger sailing canoe to the right. A decorative chain border frames the entire design. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination $10 at the left and the date 1998 at the right; the Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN appears along the lower periphery above a ribbon inscribed SEAL. |

| Additional information |
The Brederode was the flagship of Admiral Maarten Tromp during the First Anglo-Dutch War, and it was aboard this vessel that Tromp commanded the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Portland in 1653 — a three-day engagement that cost both sides heavily but allowed the Dutch convoy it was escorting to reach port. Tromp himself was killed later that year at the Battle of Scheveningen, still commanding from the Brederode.
The Marshall Islands issued dozens of brass commemorative dollars throughout the 1990s under a program that had little connection to circulating currency. KM#457 is one of a long run of naval-themed pieces from that era.
