Obverse description The national coat of arms of Sierra Leone (1960 design) occupies the central field, featuring the traditional heraldic shield with a lion passant, mountains, and a torch, supported by two lions rampant. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE arcs above, while the date 2001 appears along the lower periphery. The Pobjoy Mint privy mark PM is struck in incuse in the lower-left field. The national motto UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE is rendered in incuse lettering on the scroll beneath the shield.

Reverse description A cougar (Puma concolor) is depicted in a naturalistic reclining pose on a tree branch, oriented to the right, rendered with fine engraved detail to convey the animal's musculature and fur texture. The denomination $10 appears below the branch in the lower field. The legend BIG CATS OF THE WORLD arcs prominently across the upper portion of the field, identifying the commemorative series to which this issue belongs.
