The Marshall Islands began issuing collector coinage in 1986, shortly after gaining independence under the Compact of Free Association with the United States — an arrangement that left the islands using US dollars for everyday commerce while creating space for a sovereign commemorative program. These issues were produced by the Pobjoy Mint and targeted almost exclusively at the international collector market; very few ever circulated on the islands themselves.
KM#283 belongs to a thematically loosely defined Liberty series from the mid-1990s, a period when the Marshall Islands mint program was at peak output and issuing dozens of commemorative types annually.
