| Obverse description | The Singapore state arms emblem occupies the central field, comprising a lion passant guardant and a crescent with five stars arranged in a circle, enclosed within a shield supported by a lion and a tiger. The date 1997 appears in the exergue beneath the emblem. The country name is inscribed in four official languages surrounding the device: 'SINGAPORE' in Latin script, 'SINGAPURA' in Malay, the Tamil script rendering 'சிங்கப்பூர்', and the Chinese characters '新加坡'. |

Issued to mark the 30th anniversary of ASEAN, this coin was produced at a moment of particular irony: within weeks of its release, the Thai baht collapsed, triggering the Asian financial crisis that would devastate several of the bloc's founding economies. Singapore itself weathered the crisis better than most, but the celebratory framing of this issue was almost immediately overtaken by events.
