Obverse description A close-up portrait of the crowned head of the Statue of Liberty facing front, rendered in high relief with finely detailed radiating spikes of her diadem crown. The legend LIBERTY arcs boldly across the upper field, while the date 2001 and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appear to the right in the mid-field. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed in smaller lettering along the lower left field. The engraver's initials JMM appear at the lower left of the portrait. The design is characteristic of John M. Mercanti's neoclassical style, emphasizing dramatic contrast between the sculptural effigy and the mirror-like proof field.
