The American Gold Eagle's .9167 fineness — 22-karat — was a deliberate nod to the historical alloy used in U.S. gold coinage before 1933, chosen specifically to differentiate the Eagle from competitor bullion coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf and South African Krugerrand, which use .9999 fine gold. The copper-silver alloy added for hardness makes Eagles more resistant to handling damage, a practical concession to coins intended for direct ownership rather than vault storage.
The 2021 issue marks a significant production break: that year saw the reverse design updated for the first time since the series launched in 1986, with a new die prepared specifically for the redesigned reverse. Coins from early 2021 carry the original reverse; those from later in the year do not.
