Obverse descriptionText in English and French. At the left side is a frosted maple leaf-shaped window, with the denomination below. At the centre is a portrait of Sir John A. MacDonald, lawyer and 1st Prime Minister of Canada from 1867 to 1873 and 1878 to 1891. At the right side of the note is a see-through hologram strip with a smaller portrait of Sir John A. MacDonald at top, a depiction of the Library of Parliament in Ottawa at bottom, and transparent text and the denomination repeated throughout. As well, the hologram strip has a partially translucent border consisting of maple leaves. At the very right side of the note is the denomination once again and the year the note was issued.
Reverse descriptionThis side of the note depicts the theme of rail transportation. At left is the denomination and a mirrored image of the hologram strip. At centre is an image of The Canadian, a transcontinental passenger train, with a simplified map showing VIA Rail’s network of passenger rail routes below. Throughout the note are various mountains that are part of the Canadian Rockies in Jasper National Park. At the right side of the note is the reverse side of the maple leaf-shaped window, with the denomination below.
