Additional information

Issued to mark Namibia's fifth year of independence from South African administration, which ended formally in March 1990 after a UN-supervised transition process that had stalled repeatedly through the 1980s. The South African rand remained legal tender in Namibia alongside the newly introduced Namibian dollar until 1993, meaning this commemorative appeared just two years after the country had achieved full monetary separation.
