Singapore's independence in 1965 was not a celebrated moment — it was a forced separation, when Malaysia's parliament voted to expel Singapore from the federation. Lee Kuan Yew wept publicly at the press conference announcing it. That the 40th anniversary would be commemorated in fine silver speaks to how thoroughly the city-state had reframed that expulsion as origin myth rather than rejection.
