The 2018 vertical format $10 note was the first Bank of Canada issue designed to be held and read upright — a deliberate departure from nearly a century of horizontal banknote convention. The decision followed public consultations and was partly driven by the way younger Canadians interact with currency: thumb-and-index rather than palm-flat. Whether that reasoning holds up is debatable, but the orientation shift was genuine policy, not a design whim.

Poloz served as Governor from 2013 to 2020; Wilkins as Senior Deputy Governor. Their pairing on this issue coincided with a period of sustained low-rate policy that generated considerable public debate about the Bank's independence.
