Obverse description Dark blue-green intaglio print on white paper, with the bank title 'The Royal Bank of Canada' in large ornate script across the upper centre, above the denomination 'TEN DOLLARS' and a large guilloche numeral '10' at centre. To the right, a seated allegorical female figure representing Britannia or Commerce is engraved in fine intaglio style, accompanied by a lion at her feet. The upper margin carries the legend 'DOMINION OF CANADA' and 'INCORPORATED 1869', with the place and date 'MONTREAL, JAN. 2, 1909' at lower right and the printer's imprint 'American Bank Note Co. Ottawa' at the base.

Reverse description Printed in dark green intaglio on white paper, the reverse is dominated by a central vignette of the Royal Arms of Canada, flanked by a lion and a unicorn as supporters, with the motto scroll 'DIEU ET MON DROIT' below. The arms are surmounted by the Imperial Crown, all within a finely engraved cartouche of intricate guilloche work. Flanking the central vignette on both left and right are large lathe-work rosette panels bearing the numeral '10', enclosed within elaborate engine-turned borders.
