The Bank of New Brunswick was one of the last surviving independent Maritime chartered banks, stubbornly resisting absorption well into the early twentieth century. By 1903 it was operating on borrowed time — the bank was finally acquired by the Bank of Montreal in 1907, making late-date issues like this one among the final notes the institution ever put into circulation.
The American Bank Note Company held the printing contract throughout the bank's later years. ABNC's New York plant produced notes for dozens of Canadian chartered banks during this period, and the plates were typically retained after acquisition — occasionally resurfacing in altered form for successor institutions.
