Obverse description The obverse is printed in black with blue and orange accents. At left, a large vignette presents a three-masted sailing vessel navigating rough seas, while at right a second vignette shows a multi-storey stone commercial building. The centre carries the denomination TEN DOLLARS within an ornate guilloche medallion, with the bank title THE MERCHANTS BANK OF HALIFAX arched above and the legend DOMINION OF CANADA across the top. The date Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2nd June 1893 and a Cashier signature line appear at the lower centre, with SPECIMEN overprinted in red.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in green, with a symmetrical engraved design centred on a large circular guilloche rosette bearing a bold Roman numeral X at its heart, flanked on each side by numeral 10 counters set within smaller ornate lathe-work frames. Elaborate geometric and floral engine-turned patterns fill the field, with MERCHANTS BANK arched across the top and OF HALIFAX along the bottom border. The printer's imprint AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY, NEW YORK appears in small lettering at the lower margin.
