| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty in high relief, her hair swept back in flowing waves and gathered with a ribbon, adorned with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and a tiara of five stars. An olive branch extends beneath the truncation of the neck, rendered in fine detail. The peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper field, while the date 1874 appears in the lower exergual area. The design, engraved by William Barber, reflects the neoclassical aesthetic proposed for the international trade coinage of the era. |
