Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty with flowing wavy hair gathered at the nape, wearing a fillet inscribed LIBERTY across the brow and surmounted by a small cap. Thirteen six-pointed stars are evenly distributed around the periphery of the flat field, seven to the right and six to the left of the effigy. The date 1872 appears in large numerals at the base of the design below the truncation of the neck, engraved by Chief Engraver William Barber in a bold, classical style characteristic of his pattern work.
