The Royal Canadian Bank was a Toronto-chartered institution that collapsed in 1887, leaving depositors and noteholders with significant losses — one of several Ontario bank failures that accelerated federal debate over tighter reserve requirements. Notes issued in the early 1870s predate the bank's more desperate later years, when it was already overextended in railway and land speculation.
The British American Bank Note Company had only recently established itself in Ottawa by 1872, having incorporated the previous year from a merger of two competing engraving firms. This note falls among the company's earliest independent productions.
